L5 - Pilot (2010)

OBJECTIVE

L5 was written as a pilot by some close filmmaker friends of mine. Most of the talent was in Chicago so we shot it out there… in the middle of December… in the middle of a snowstorm. Mostly interiors… So in a narrative, really the goal was all about telling the story and finding the right science fiction elements to service the vision.

APPROACH

We filmed for 7 days if I remember correctly. The space suits were constructed by the production designer, Chad, with help along the way. For one of the scenes we filmed at the Challenger Learning Center. On one day we filmed in a decommissioned Armored Personnel Carrier at a Harley Davidson dealership in Milwaukee. We cast in Chicago, and only brought on a small team of LA crew to shoot this. Somehow Stanley and the extremely talented (and patient) VFX team were able to add the rest of the sci-fi elements to the picture.
